Get Your Australian Skills Assessment Right the First Time

Maria, a software engineer from Seattle, was ready to submit her Expression of Interest for permanent residency. She had five years of experience and figured she was more than qualified.

Then she discovered something called a “skills assessment”, a required step she'd never heard of. And it needed more than just a resume.

Maria contacted me with a flood of questions. Since I'm not a registered migration agent or migration lawyer, I can't give specific visa advice. If you're applying for permanent residency, you'll need a skills assessment too. It confirms your qualifications meet Australian standards. Without a positive assessment, you can't get points for your qualifications, can't submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect, and can't move forward with most skilled migration pathways.

Since this tripped up Maria (and she almost didn't apply because of it), I thought I'd share what I learned from her experience. I've included links and statistics from the Department of Home Affairs to show you what you're up against.

Instead of trusting what people say about their qualifications, the government hands this checking job to 42 different assessing authorities². Each one handles specific job types.

Think of it like professional licensing or certification. Australia wants to double-check a software engineer from Seattle (like Maria) or an accountant from Toronto really has the skills they claim. This protects Australian employers and keeps the visa system honest.

The assessment looks at two main parts: your qualifications and your work experience. Qualifications include education, training, and certifications. Work experience covers roles, duties, and how long you worked.

How Skills Assessment Fits Into Your Visa Timeline

You need to get your skills assessed before you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. This goes for skilled migration visas like the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) or Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190).

Your skills assessment gets you points for qualifications and work experience in the Australian points test. You need at least 65 points³, but competitive scores range from 85-90 points for independent skilled migration.

Maria learned this the hard way during her research. She'd planned to submit her Expression of Interest (EOI) right away. She thought she could get her skills assessed while her application was being looked at.

Maria was wrong. 

SkillSelect needs your assessment reference number and result details upfront. No positive assessment means no EOI submission.

For permanent residency visa applications, this timing matters. Assessment processing takes 4-10 weeks⁴ depending on your authority. Plan ahead, especially if you're working with employer sponsorship or state nomination deadlines.

Family Considerations

• Partner assessment needs: Only the primary applicant needs skills assessment. Partners only need assessment if they want to contribute partner points (5-10 additional points)⁵ to the application
• Cost approximations for families
  • Partner as dependent only: One assessment + two English tests = $1,200-$2,200 AUD total
  • Partner contributing points: Two assessments + two English tests = $1,700-$3,250 AUD total
• Timing synchronization: If both partners need assessments, start the longer-processing authority first to align completion dates
• Document sharing: Marriage certificates and other family documents may be needed for multiple applications

Who Needs an Australian Skills Assessment?

Just about everyone applying for skilled migration visas needs skills assessment. This includes people going for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190), most employer-sponsored visas, and regional provisional visas.

This rule doesn't change no matter where you studied or worked before. Australian qualifications still need assessment for visa applications.

Only a handful of jobs don't need assessment. These exceptions are listed on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Many people wonder if their specific profession needs assessment. The answer is usually yes, you need a skills assessment especially if you are applying for a 189 visa.

Maria found out that her computer science degree from the University of Washington and five years at Seattle tech companies needed assessment through the Australian Computer Society. Even working for Microsoft and Amazon wouldn't change this requirement. Her experience still needed checking against Australian software engineering standards.

The 42 different assessing authorities recognized by the Department of Home Affairs cover everything from accounting and engineering to trades and healthcare. Each job on Australia's skilled occupation lists shows which authority handles assessments for that profession.

Step-by-Step Skills Assessment Process

The skills assessment process has four main parts no matter what your job or which authority checks you. I’m going to use Maria's process through the Australian Computer Society assessment as an example. NOTE: This is a basic outline of the skills assessment process. Your skills assessment may be different or have additional steps.

Find Your Assessing Authority

Maria's first step was finding which organization checks software engineers. The Department of Home Affairs website lists the chosen assessing authority for each job code. For software engineers (ANZSCO 261313), that's the Australian Computer Society.

Each job has a specific ANZSCO code. The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations puts every profession into categories. Your ANZSCO code decides which assessing authority checks your skills. It also determines which visa pathways are open to you.

Review Assessment Requirements

Once Maria found ACS as her assessing authority, she spent a week looking over their assessment guidelines. Every authority has different steps and different paperwork rules.

The ACS website showed several assessment pathways depending on qualification level and work experience. Maria's computer science degree qualified her for the standard assessment pathway.

Figuring out what they want before you start gathering documents saves you tons of time and frustration later. Maria found that ACS needed specific work reference formats. Getting the wrong type of reference letter from a previous employer would mean starting over with document collection.

Trades and Vocational Qualifications

Trades assessment involves hands-on skill demonstration beyond paperwork review. Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) handles most trades assessments with pathways including job ready programs and skills assessments for completed apprenticeships.

Experience-Only and RPL Pathways

Recognition of Prior Learning options work well for professionals who don't have formal qualifications but have loads of relevant experience. These assessments need way more detailed evidence about your work history, projects, and duties.

RPL gives valuable options for experienced professionals whose career paths didn't include traditional qualifications.

How long assessments take and what they cost depends on which authority you're dealing with. Processing times have gotten better than they used to be.

These improvements come from tech upgrades and better processes they put in place throughout 2024. Maria benefited from ACS's new platform launched in April 2024. This gives real-time application tracking and faster document review.

Work References
