Maria, a software engineer from Seattle, was ready to submit her Expression of Interest for permanent residency. She had five years of experience and figured she was more than qualified.

Then she discovered something called a “skills assessment”, a required step she'd never heard of. And it needed more than just a resume.

Maria contacted me with a flood of questions. Since I'm not a registered migration agent or migration lawyer, I can't give specific visa advice. But I could help her understand the skills assessment process and point her to resources. (Contacting a registered migration agent for a free visa assessment is always smart.)

If you're applying for permanent residency, you'll need a skills assessment too. It confirms your qualifications meet Australian standards. Without a positive assessment, you can't get points for your qualifications, can't submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect, and can't move forward with most skilled migration pathways.

Since this tripped up Maria (and she almost didn't apply because of it), I thought I'd share what I learned from her experience. I've included links and statistics from the Department of Home Affairs to show you what you're up against.

⏱️ Quick Summary

Skills assessment confirms your qualifications meet Australian standards and is required before applying for most skilled migration visas. Find your assessing authority, gather documents, submit with fees ($500-$1,500 AUD), then wait 4-10 weeks. 93% of well-prepared applications succeed1.

⚠️ Important: Immigration policies change regularly. Check the Department of Home Affairs website for current information and consult with a registered migration agent for personalized advice.

Australia's Visa Skills Assessment Requirements

Skills assessment is Australia's way of double-checking skilled migration. The Department of Home Affairs wants proof that international qualifications and work experience actually match Australian standards for each job.

Instead of trusting what people say about their qualifications, the government hands this checking job to 42 different assessing authorities2. Each one handles specific job types.

Assessment OutcomeSuccess RateApplication Volume (2023-24)
Positive Assessment93.2%89,450 applications
Negative Assessment4.8%4,620 applications
Withdrawn/Incomplete2.0%1,930 applications

⚠️ Important: These statistics reflect historical performance and don't guarantee individual outcomes. Processing volumes and success rates may vary based on current policy changes and application quality.

Think of it like professional licensing or certification. Australia wants to double-check a software engineer from Seattle (like Maria) or an accountant from Toronto really has the skills they claim. This protects Australian employers and keeps the visa system honest.

5-step Australian skills assessment process from finding authority to receiving results

The assessment looks at two main parts: your qualifications and your work experience. Qualifications include education, training, and certifications. Work experience covers roles, duties, and how long you worked.

📑 Documentation tip

Skills assessment isn't about passing or failing a test. It's about showing that your current qualifications and experience meet specific Australian benchmarks. Most professionals who've worked in their field for several years have the skills needed.

How Skills Assessment Fits Into Your Visa Timeline

You need to get your skills assessed before you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. This goes for skilled migration visas like the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) or Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190).

Your skills assessment gets you points for qualifications and work experience in the Australian points test. You need at least 65 points3, but competitive scores range from 85-90 points for independent skilled migration.

Maria learned this the hard way during her research. She'd planned to submit her Expression of Interest (EOI) right away. She thought she could get her skills assessed while her application was being looked at.

Maria was wrong.

SkillSelect needs your assessment reference number and result details upfront. No positive assessment means no EOI submission.

For permanent residency visa applications, this timing matters. Assessment processing takes 4-10 weeks4 depending on your authority. Plan ahead, especially if you're working with employer sponsorship or state nomination deadlines.

Family Considerations

  • Partner assessment needs: Only the primary applicant needs skills assessment. Partners only need assessment if they want to contribute partner points (5-10 additional points)5 to the application
  • Cost approximations for families
    • Partner as dependent only: One assessment + two English tests = $1,200-$2,200 AUD total
    • Partner contributing points: Two assessments + two English tests = $1,700-$3,250 AUD total
  • Timing synchronization: If both partners need assessments, start the longer-processing authority first to align completion dates
  • Document sharing: Marriage certificates and other family documents may be needed for multiple applications

Who Needs an Australian Skills Assessment?

Just about everyone applying for skilled migration visas needs skills assessment. This includes people going for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190), most employer-sponsored visas, and regional provisional visas.

This rule doesn't change no matter where you studied or worked before. Australian qualifications still need assessment for visa applications.

Only a handful of jobs don't need assessment. These exceptions are listed on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Many people wonder if their specific profession needs assessment. The answer is usually yes, you need a skills assessment especially if you are applying for a 189 visa.

Maria found out that her computer science degree from the University of Washington and five years at Seattle tech companies needed assessment through the Australian Computer Society. Even working for Microsoft and Amazon wouldn't change this requirement. Her experience still needed checking against Australian software engineering standards.

The 42 different assessing authorities recognized by the Department of Home Affairs cover everything from accounting and engineering to trades and healthcare. Each job on Australia's skilled occupation lists shows which authority handles assessments for that profession.

Step-by-Step Skills Assessment Process

The skills assessment process has four main parts no matter what your job or which authority checks you. I’m going to use Maria's process through the Australian Computer Society assessment as an example. NOTE: This is a basic outline of the skills assessment process. Your skills assessment may be different or have additional steps.

Skills assessment timeline showing 12-week process from authority research to results

Find Your Assessing Authority

Maria's first step was finding which organization checks software engineers. The Department of Home Affairs website lists the chosen assessing authority for each job code. For software engineers (ANZSCO 261313), that's the Australian Computer Society.

Each job has a specific ANZSCO code. The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations puts every profession into categories. Your ANZSCO code decides which assessing authority checks your skills. It also determines which visa pathways are open to you.

📃 Application Tip

If your job spans multiple areas (like biomedical engineer working in software), choose the authority for your main duties and the Australian job market you're targeting. You can only use one assessing authority per visa application.

Review Assessment Requirements

Once Maria found ACS as her assessing authority, she spent a week looking over their assessment guidelines. Every authority has different steps and different paperwork rules.

The ACS website showed several assessment pathways depending on qualification level and work experience. Maria's computer science degree qualified her for the standard assessment pathway.

Figuring out what they want before you start gathering documents saves you tons of time and frustration later. Maria found that ACS needed specific work reference formats. Getting the wrong type of reference letter from a previous employer would mean starting over with document collection.

Gather Required Documentation

Document preparation took most of Maria's assessment timeline. The ACS needed certified copies of her degree certificate, official transcripts, detailed work references on company letterhead, passport pages, and English test results.

The work references proved most challenging. ACS needs specific information including detailed job descriptions, dates of work, salary ranges, and supervisor contact details. Maria had to work with HR departments at three previous employers to get properly formatted letters that met ACS standards.

Document certification means having authorized officials check that copies match original documents. This includes notaries, lawyers, or consulate staff. This adds time and cost to your preparation process.

💵 Budget Tip

The assessment fee is just the starting point. You'll also need to budget for document certification ($20-$50 per document)6, English tests ($350-$400 AUD)7, and potential revision fees.

⚠️ Important: Cost estimates provide general guidance only, not financial advice. Actual costs vary based on individual circumstances, document requirements, and currency fluctuations. Budget accordingly and verify current fees before applying.

Maria's ACS Document Checklist

  • Academic Qualifications: Certified copy of computer science degree certificate and official transcripts
  • Employment References: Detailed letters from 3 previous employers on company letterhead
  • Identity Documents: Certified copy of passport biographical pages
  • English Language: IELTS Academic results (overall 7.0, no band below 6.0)
  • Additional Documents: Resume/CV showing career progression and technology skills
  • Certification Costs: Budget $200-300 AUD for notarization and certification services

The paperwork requirements can feel overwhelming. You're not alone. Australia loves documentation. They want everything certified, stamped, and well-formatted. But being thorough with your paperwork upfront saves you from delays and revision requests later.

Submit Application and Wait

After gathering documents, Maria submitted her ACS application online with the $1,450 AUD fee. She received confirmation within 24 hours and could track progress through the ACS portal.

Most authorities now offer online application systems with real-time tracking. This has improved from previous paper-based processes.

Assessment Pathways by Background

Not everyone takes the same route through skills assessment. Your education background, work experience, and what kind of qualifications you have decide which path works for you.

⚠️ Important: Skills assessment requirements vary significantly by individual circumstances, qualifications, and work experience. This guide provides general information only. Review your specific authority's requirements and consider professional guidance for complex cases.

Degree-Qualified Professionals

Maria's pathway through ACS shows the standard experience for university-qualified professionals. With her computer science degree and five years of relevant work experience, she followed the standard assessment route needing qualification checking plus work evidence.

Trades and Vocational Qualifications

Trades assessment involves hands-on skill demonstration beyond paperwork review. Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) handles most trades assessments with pathways including job ready programs and skills assessments for completed apprenticeships.

Experience-Only and RPL Pathways

Recognition of Prior Learning options work well for professionals who don't have formal qualifications but have loads of relevant experience. These assessments need way more detailed evidence about your work history, projects, and duties.

RPL gives valuable options for experienced professionals whose career paths didn't include traditional qualifications.

Skills Assessment Processing Times and Fees

How long assessments take and what they cost depends on which authority you're dealing with. Processing times have gotten better than they used to be.

Processing Times by Authority

Assessing AuthorityStandard ProcessingStandard Fee Range
ACS (ICT)4-6 weeks8$1,450 AUD9
Engineers Australia6-8 weeks10$800-$1,200 AUD11
VETASSESS8-10 weeks12$900-$1,100 AUD13
CPA Australia4-6 weeks14$700-$900 AUD15
TRA (Trades)6-12 weeks16$500-$800 AUD17

Processing times and fees as of December 2024

⚠️ Important: Processing times and fees change regularly. These figures reflect December 2024 data. Check directly with your assessing authority for current fees and processing estimates before applying.

These improvements come from tech upgrades and better processes they put in place throughout 2024. Maria benefited from ACS's new platform launched in April 2024. This gives real-time application tracking and faster document review.

Total costs extend beyond base assessment fees. Document certification costs $20-$50 per document. English language tests range from $350-$400 AUD. Professional migration advice adds $500-$2,000 for complex cases18. Maria's total assessment cost reached nearly $2,000 AUD19 including all additional expenses.

Common Assessment Challenges

Skills assessment problems usually come from paperwork issues, work reference troubles, or not understanding what the authority actually wants. Learning from common mistakes helps you avoid expensive delays.

Skills assessment best practices comparison showing what to avoid versus recommended approaches

Common Assessment Mistakes to Avoid

  • Generic Employment References: HR letters that only confirm dates and salary
  • Incorrect Certification: Using non-authorized certifiers
  • Qualification Gaps: Failing to explain study breaks or career changes
  • Communication Delays: Not responding promptly to authority requests

Work References

Work references cause more assessment delays than any other factor. Many employers don't understand the specific needs Australian assessing authorities have.

Maria prevented this by giving her previous employers ACS template letters and detailed explanations of needed information. She kept contact with supervisors who could verify her work details years later.

Documentation Issues

Getting detailed work references proves more difficult than expected. HR departments give only basic work confirmations rather than the detailed role descriptions assessment authorities need.

For older work periods, maintain LinkedIn connections with supervisors and colleagues who can verify your work if official company records are unavailable.

What Happens After Your Assessment

Getting your skills assessment result is a big step in your visa process. Knowing how to use your assessment helps you move ahead with your visa plans.

Maria got her positive ACS result after six weeks. It confirmed her qualifications and experience met Australian software engineering standards. Her assessment letter included specific details about qualification recognition and work experience evaluation.

Assessment outcomes include:

  • Overall assessment result (positive/negative)
  • Qualification recognition details
  • Relevant work experience calculation
  • Assessment reference number for visa applications
  • Validity period (3 years from issue date)

Your positive assessment lets you move ahead with Expression of Interest (EOI) submissions through SkillSelect. The assessment reference number and result details are needed fields in your EOI submission.

Assessment validity periods last three years20. This lets you use the same result for multiple visa applications during that time. Maria used her ACS assessment for both 189 visa points calculation and 190 visa state nomination opportunities.

Common Skills Assessment Questions
