Taxes

Australian taxes are straightforward if you’re Australian. If you’re an American expat? You’re filing in two countries. The US doesn’t stop taxing you just because you moved, and Australia wants their cut too.

You’ll need an Australian Tax File Number (TFN) immediately. You’ll file your Australian tax return online between July and October. And if you’re American, you’ll still file your US expat taxes every year, dealing with FBAR and FATCA reporting requirements if your foreign accounts exceed certain thresholds. Your Australian superannuation creates additional complications for your US return.

The one good thing: you can claim a Medicare levy exemption and get 2% of your income back if you’re not eligible for Medicare yet. These guides walk you through Australian tax residency rules, filing deadlines, and common questions from people filing their first Australian return.
