The Department of Home Affairs awards zero points for Competent English on the skilled migration points test. Your passport checks a box for eligibility, but it contributes nothing to your actual score.

The skilled migration points test has a minimum of 65, but meeting the minimum doesn't mean you'll receive an invitation. Plan for 2–4 weeks of focused practice. If you can commit to 60–90 minutes daily, a 2-week intensive push works. A more moderate 30–45 minutes daily over 4 weeks covers the same ground with less daily pressure.

What the AI Rewards (And Penalizes)

PTE's AI scoring system weights fluency 1.75 times higher than pronunciation in speaking scores.⁷ That means hesitations and self-corrections hurt you more than mispronouncing a word. Counterintuitive, but it changes your entire approach to the speaking sections.

Five rules for the AI:

1. Never self-correct mid-sentence. If you mispronounce a word, keep going. The AI punishes do-overs harder than minor slips.
2. Speak at a natural, measured pace. Think 6 out of 10 on a speed scale. The AI evaluates clarity and rhythm, not speed.
3. Eliminate filler sounds. No “um,” “uh,” or “like.” The microphone closes after 3 seconds of silence, so pausing to think reads as a hesitation.
4. Skip memorized templates. PTE's 2025 AI updates detect and penalize template responses. Use your own words.
5. Pick one spelling standard and stick with it. British or American, doesn't matter. Mixing “organize” and “recognise” in the same test costs points. Americans living in Australia, watch for this one.

Here's the part nobody warns you about. You'll be in a room full of other test-takers, all speaking their Describe Image responses at the same time. It sounds like a boring cocktail party where everyone's describing bar charts. Practice with background noise so it doesn't throw you off.

The Four Question Types That Matter Most

PTE has around 20 question types across its four sections. You don't need to practice all of them equally. 

Four types carry outsized weight because your performance on each one feeds into two skill scores simultaneously. Do well on Read Aloud, and the AI boosts both your Speaking and Reading scores from that single task. Focus 80% of your practice here:

1. Read Aloud (impacts Speaking AND Reading). Read at a steady, linked pace. Never restart a sentence.

3. Write from Dictation (approximately 70% of your Listening score).⁸ Every word counts. Play it back mentally and check spelling before submitting.
4. Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks (heaviest Reading weighting). Use grammar context clues. Your native instincts are your biggest advantage here.

Format Traps to Watch For

Summarize Written Text requires a single sentence under 75 words. Write two sentences and you score zero for form, no matter how good the content is. Your instinct to write a proper paragraph will work against you here.

Multiple-choice questions with multiple correct answers carry negative marking. A wrong selection loses points. If you're not confident in an answer, leave it blank.

The Department of Home Affairs does not accept PTE Academic Online (the at-home version).⁹ Only test center results qualify for immigration purposes. Make sure you're booking the right test.

Results and Retakes

Most scores arrive in 2–5 business days, often within 24–48 hours. Pearson sends score reports electronically to the Department of Home Affairs at no additional cost. The Department requires this electronic verification. Printed or downloaded score reports aren't accepted for visa applications.

No mandatory waiting period between attempts. Maximum 12 attempts in 12 months.¹¹ Each score is independent, so a lower retake doesn't erase a higher previous score. At roughly USD $280 per attempt, budget for 2–3 tries if that takes the pressure off your first sitting.
