Bondi Location and Atmosphere
To me, Bondi is similar to Santa Monica in Los Angeles. It’s only about 4.5 miles away from Sydney’s Central Business District, but feel like a separate beach town. This beachfront suburb is known for its beautiful coastline and lively atmosphere. With its broad, sandy beach, Bondi is the classic dream of an Australian coastal lifestyle with a mix of urban convenience.
For families with a couple of kids there are plenty of outdoor activities, from surfing and swimming to coastal walks and a skate park. Bondi is also known for its trendy boutiques and overpriced restaurants. (That last one was my opinion.)
The community is diverse with a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of Southern California's laid-back beach cities.
Commuting to the CBD from Bondi
Public Transport
Living in Bondi, you'll have a variety of convenient commuting options to Sydney's Central Business District (CBD).
The 333 Express Bus has round-the-clock service from Bondi Beach to the CBD and is most like the bus you’ll be taking to work. During peak hours, buses run every 10 minutes, making the commute about a 40-45 minutes trip, depending on traffic.
Alternatively, the 380 Bus, which also runs 24/7, offers services roughly every 20 minutes during peak hours. Bear in mind that the 380 will take you to Bondi Junction train station. From there, you can catch a direct train to the CBD, which typically takes about 10-15 minutes. Trains run every 3-4 minutes during peak hours, ensuring a swift commute.
Cycling
Sydney has invested a lot in making the city more bike-friendly with dedicated paths and lanes just for cyclists. The journey from Bondi to Sydney's CBD by bike is about 5 miles.
Don't own a bike, no worries! There are several bike-sharing services around, making it a budget-friendly and flexible transportation option.
Driving
If you're a fan of driving, you'll find getting from Bondi to Sydney's CBD to be quite simple. It's roughly an 5 mile trip via Old South Head Rd and New South Head Rd and usually takes about 20-30 minutes when traffic is light. Of course, during rush hours, it might take a bit longer, around 40-50 minutes.
Sydney's CBD has plenty of well-kept parking facilities, if you prefer to have your own vehicle handy. However, it's worth keeping in mind that parking costs in the CBD can add up quickly, and traffic in Sydney can be awful during peak times. Personally, I would never recommend driving everyday.
Bondi Rental Prices
Living in Bondi is living the iconic Australian beach life, but this dream comes with a price tag. A high price tag and finding a place can be difficult.
For a cozy one-bedroom apartment near the beach, you're looking at weekly rent starting around $700. Yes, that’s a week. A two-bedroom will set you back about $900 per week, and a three-bedroom apartment can go for $1300 per week.
If you're willing to trade the beachfront views for a more affordable lifestyle, consider moving a bit inland to Bondi Junction. You'll still near the beach, but the rent is slightly more affordable. Plus, commuting is short since you’re right next to the train.
In Bondi, the majority of available rentals are apartments, but there are a few terrace houses up for grabs every once in a while. These houses make a great choice for families or friends looking to share and save on expenses. However, they're quite popular, so they might not be available all the time. If you do find one, then be sure to move fast as it will not be available for long.
